What is Reformer Pilates?
If you’ve been hearing the buzz about Reformer Pilates and wondering what it’s all about, we’ve got you covered!
So, what exactly is Reformer Pilates, and how is it different from mat-based pilates?
Reformer Pilates is a form of pilates that uses a specialised piece of equipment called the “Reformer”, sometimes referred to as a reformer bed. Picture this: a sleek, bed-like frame with a moving carriage, adjustable springs, straps, and a footbar. While it may look intimidating at first, the Reformer is your ultimate pilates partner, designed to help you move more dynamically and with greater control than you’d typically experience in a mat class.
Joseph Pilates, the physical trainer and inventor behind pilates, designed the Reformer to support, challenge, and elevate your movement practice. Whether you’re aiming to improve flexibility, build strength, or simply try something new, the Reformer is here to guide (and surprise) you.
At Strong + Bendy, we’ve designed our Reformer classes to be welcoming, empowering, and fun. No experience? No problem! Our expert instructors are there to guide you through every step of the way.
Here’s what you can expect:
A full-body workout: Reformer Pilates engages everything: from your core and glutes to muscles you didn’t even know existed. The magic of the springs means you’re working against resistance, so your muscles are constantly engaged and working hard
Endless variety: No repetition! With the Reformer’s versatile setup, we’re able to mix it up every single time. You’ll experience movements that challenge your balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility in new ways
Gentle on joints: The Reformer’s sliding carriage and adjustable resistance make it a dream for anyone looking for a low-impact workout. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or just want to give your joints some TLC, reformer pilates has your back (literally)
Feel-good vibes: Reformer Pilates is all about making you feel strong, capable, and connected to your body. Forget punishing workouts — this is movement that celebrates what your body can do
So how is Reformer Pilates different to Mat Pilates?
We’re big fans of both Reformer and mat-based Pilates, but they’re like two sisters with very different vibes.
Mat Pilates:
Uses just a mat and your body weight (and maybe some props like a magic circle or resistance bands)
Focuses on building core strength, balance, and control using gravity as resistance
At Strong + Bendy’s Trowbridge Studio we do classic Matwork Pilates classes, and also mat-based POP HIIT Pilates classes (using pilates inspired core moves and interval training choreographed to music)
Reformer Pilates:
The Reformer bed adds a whole new dimension of resistance with springs, straps, and the moving carriage
Provides extra support or challenge, depending on your goals
Allows for a wider range of exercises, from gentle stretches to high-intensity movements
Feels like a guided, full-body experience with a sprinkle of luxury (Who wouldn’t love gliding on a carriage?)
In short: Think of Reformer as Mat Pilates’ cool cousin who’s always traveling the world and teaching you new things.
